A loop over the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, the closest thing to hills
By Dutch standards the Heuvelrug is mountainous. By any other standard it is a gentle ridge covered in pine forest, which makes it perfect for an autumn afternoon.
The route
Out through Zeist, up to the Amerongse Berg, then back along forest gravel towards Doorn. Most of the climbing is in short, steep pieces that arrive right after you have convinced yourself the hills are over.
Notes
Some forest paths are closed to bikes during wet months, so check the signs. The café at the top of the Amerongse Berg is closed on Mondays — learned the hard way.
